Freelance florist rates: calculate and compare a price

A practical method and a fictional calculation, without an invented market average.
7 min read
Published by FlolyaThere is no single freelance florist rate for every assignment. Price depends on the work, time committed, expenses, included purchases and working arrangements. Before comparing, agree the scope and the unit: hour, day or fixed fee.
This guide does not claim a market average or recommend a rate scale. It offers a preparation method and a fictional example. Tax references concern France and were checked on 16 October 2026.
Hour, day or fixed fee: define the unit
| Unit | What to define | Useful question |
|---|---|---|
| Hour | Chargeable time, preparation and any minimum | Is travel charged separately? |
| Day | Included duration, breaks and agreed overruns | What happens if scope changes? |
| Fixed fee | Deliverables, quantities, approvals and exclusions | Who pays for purchases and additions? |
A day does not have one implicit duration shared by every professional. Write down what it includes and how additional work is agreed. A fixed production fee does not automatically cover retail service, delivery or dismantling.
Build a rate around your own business
Estimate the income the business must provide and the expenses it must cover. Include non-billable time for enquiries, quotes, organisation, tool maintenance and finding clients. Invoiced turnover is not disposable income.
- Estimate business expenses such as insurance, tools, transport, software and premises where relevant.
- Identify contributions and taxes for your own circumstances rather than assuming one universal percentage.
- Allow for unavailable days and administration when estimating genuinely billable days.
- Estimate assignment-specific preparation, work, tidying, travel and purchases.
- Check whether the resulting price is consistent with the defined work and your capacity to deliver it.
Dividing an employee’s monthly wage by monthly hours does not produce an equivalent freelance rate. Wages and invoices cover different expenses and working arrangements. The actual relationship must also be consistent with self-employment.
A fictional calculation
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Production | 6 h × €30 | €180 |
| Preparation and tidying | 1 h × €30 | €30 |
| Travel time | 1 h × €30 | €30 |
| Agreed travel expenses | Separate assumption | €24 |
| Illustrative total | 180 + 30 + 30 + 24 | €264 |
The shop supplies flowers and consumables in this example. If the freelancer purchases them, the proposal must explain what is charged and on which terms. The total does not establish net income: actual expenses, contributions and taxes still apply. The tax and contribution treatment of expenses also needs checking.
Compare proposals covering the same work
- Same date, location and committed duration.
- Same bouquet quantities or task list.
- Preparation, tidying, delivery and dismantling clearly included or excluded.
- Flowers, consumables and tools supplied by the same party.
- Travel, parking and accommodation expenses shown separately.
- Price excluding tax, applicable VAT and total payable clearly stated.
A lower quote may exclude preparation or travel. A higher quote may include purchases, a vehicle or specific expertise. Clarify differences before negotiating the amount. Agreement on price still needs agreement on the expected result.
Prepare a clear shop-support brief
Clarify VAT and payment terms
In France, professionals qualifying for the VAT exemption scheme invoice the relevant domestic transactions without VAT and include the applicable legal wording. Micro-entrepreneur status and VAT exemption are different matters. Check your regime, conditions and current wording with official sources or your adviser.
Where VAT applies, check the treatment of the actual services and goods invoiced. The VAT rate on a sold bouquet does not establish the rate for freelance support services. Show the price before tax, applicable VAT and total payable.
Agree payment terms and the treatment of changes or cancellation. Confirm additions in writing, including extra travel, increased production, urgent purchases or a longer assignment. Avoid leaving the price open until the end of the day.
Explain the price clearly
Frequently asked questions
- What is the average hourly rate for a freelance florist?
- This guide has no representative sample from which to claim a reliable average. Compare proposals for equivalent tasks, durations, purchases and expenses.
- Does a day rate always include travel?
- No. Ask what duration and scope are covered. Travel time, transport expenses and parking may be treated differently under each agreement.
- Is the invoiced price the freelancer’s income?
- No. Turnover must cover business expenses, contributions, taxes and non-billable time according to the professional’s circumstances.
